Tokya CTG-1 is a measuring device that shows the thickness of the paint surface. The paint thickness gauge can measure the total thickness of the paint surface, varnish and coating on sheet metal. The gauge makes it very easy to detect, for example, chipped or overpainted areas on a car.

The meter works on most common iron and metal surfaces (Fe and Nfe). The meter is able to measure layers up to 2 mm with an accuracy of 0.02 mm. It is recommended to measure the thickness of the paint surface before polishing, especially if the car is not brand new, taken out of the packaging.

The paintwork of used cars has probably been touched up and polished by the previous owner. There is nothing more annoying than a perfectly smooth polish and then suddenly the paintwork cracks due to thin paint. We recommend that you always measure the paintwork before you start polishing.

Calibration instructions can be found in the user manual. The measurement is taken by lightly pressing the meter against the paint surface, making sure that the meter is perpendicular to the paint surface. Repeat the measurement in several places.

For example, it is recommended to take dozens of measurements on the bonnet, from different sides of the bonnet. It is worth recording the results in the form of a map so that you can monitor the surface thinning during polishing. Measuring is not rocket science, but simple and convenient!

Measuring Tips: Painted Surfaces: The paint surface is usually built up like this: primer on the bottom, then the actual paint, and finally the gloss varnish. It is not worth breaking the varnish on a painted car, as it does not look very good. A paint thickness gauge measures all these layers in one measurement, but does not show just the thickness of the varnish.

A good place to check the average paint thickness is often to take measurements, for example from under the hood where there is no paint layer but there is primer and paint. By taking measurements from here, you will get information about the thickness of the layer formed by the primer and paint. ALWAYS measure from several different places and determine the average thickness based on these.

Once you know the thickness of the primer and paint, it is easy to calculate the average thickness of the topcoat by measuring the surface from the outer shells. Always take measurements from several places, as paint and varnish vary slightly in thickness. There may also be layers of significantly different thickness below the paint surface, which usually indicates that it has been painted, sanded, patched, or similar repairs have been made.

Special care should be taken when polishing such areas. Directly painted surfaces: You can easily measure directly painted metal sheets directly from the painted surface. However, note that the primer is also included in the measurement result.

If you find a sheet of metal somewhere that only has a primer, you can measure it in a similar way to cars with a lacquer finish, which will give you a closer look at the thickness of the actual paint surface.
